Divorce in Suffolk County
According to researchers, the divorce rate in Long Island is actually much lower than the national average. The supposed cause: New York’s tough divorce laws, which for a long time required that a spouse seeking a divorce allege grounds for the proceeding like adultery, abandonment or imprisonment.
Those laws changed in 2010, allowing New Yorkers to cite the “irretrievable breakdown of the marriage” as the cause of their divorce. But the rates are still low. According to a study from the Albany Business Journal, Suffolk County had a divorce rate of only 2.67 divorces per 1,000 people in 2014.
Since the passage of the new law, more options have opened up for New Yorkers seeking divorce. Read more about your divorce options here. /practice-areas/divorce/
