Divorce in Nassau County
Until recently, New York had some of the strictest divorce laws in the country. Basically, the spouse seeking the divorce would have to prove that the dissolution of the marriage was the other spouse’s fault based on prescribed grounds such as adultery or abandonment.
These laws changed in 2010, allowing spouses seeking divorce to cite the “irretrievable breakdown of the marriage” as the cause of their divorce. Despite this change, New York’s divorce rate has remained low as compared to the rest of the country.
Nassau County in particular has an especially low divorce rate. 1.79 divorces in 1,000 people on average were performed in Nassau County in 2014, which is even lower than the rate in nearby Suffolk County (2.67 per 1,000 people).
